Freedom Writers's Review

As a teacher in the making, I thought that a teacher just teach in the class, give assignments and quizzes, make some activities and give grades. Until  that perception was changed after watching the movie entitled Freedom Writers. The movie put us into the reality of teaching and made us realize  how complicated being a teacher is. You really need to understand the diversity of your students, you need to have patience and you should be ready of doing sacrifices.

Teacher Gruwell who is the main character in the story chose to teach in Wilson High School because of the Voluntary Implementation Program without even knowing the nature of the school. Students live by generations of strict moral codes and protecting their own group at all cost. Many are in gangs  and almost all of them knew that there are people who was killed by the gang. Ms. Gruwell, instead of quitting the job tried to understand her students and made activities to unsealed the code that divides the students. One effective strategy she used is the writing daily journal, which made her students open up with their lives and so started a connection between Ms. Gruwell and the students. After that , students started to trust her and they realized how education is very important. Though they have faced many challenges, they have overcome it beacuse they work not as a group but as a family.

The movie showed us how a teacher can  do his job to its extent. Also,  it teaches us how effective and important teaching wiith a passion and dedication is.
